The ingredients needed to cook Kaalan:

  1. You need 1 no of plantain Raw (Nendra kaya) -.
  2. You need 1 cup of Yam / Chena (chopped) -.

Steps to make Kaalan:

  1. Peel and cube the plantain and yam.
  2. In a kadai, add plantain and yam pieces along with turmeric powder, chilly powder, salt, curry leaves and 1 cup of water.
  3. Cook till the vegetables are done..
  4. Meanwhile, grind together coconut, pepper, cumin seeds and green chilly to a fine paste.
  5. Add this paste to the cooked vegetables.Boil them well stirring continuously.Add salt..
  6. Finally add curd to this and simmer for 2 – 3 minutes. Do not boil..
  7. Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds, red chilly fenugreek seeds and curry leaves..
  8. Add this to the gravy..
  9. The simple and tasty Kaalan is ready to be served..
